2015-16 Cross-country Plate Competition

Two Hard Fought Contests Conclude

The 15th annual Cross-country Plate competition ended at the National and Paskar Owor's deserved victory was whisked away at the last moment due to a late DNS and DNF by two other athletes on the day, which allowed Will Cockerell to sneak in to win by just one point.  Hardly justice, but them's the rules. It's an interesting men's list with plenty 'getting starts' but unable to crack on; the outstanding Andrius Jaksevicius a case in point.  The feeling amongst the team managers that this is the most promising local squad that we've had for over 40 years is evidenced by the calibre of names in the top 16; and to back them up, a little lower down there are two of the most gifted local signings for a generation in Gus Upton and Ed Auden.  Next step to get those two's attendance rate above 12.5%, then we'll be really smokin'. The women's season saw their top order from 2014-15 simply blown away.  The fab four of Wilkins, Doyle, Rhodes and Mackenzie's points tally of 531 was reduced to just 146 as 29 races became 8.  The shockwaves reverberated through the squad who in turn mustered only 45 races, compared to last year's 73.  But no-one's panicking - it's just been an unfortunate season which still saw them medal in both South of the Thames events [and the Southern cross relay not denoted here].And let's in no way discount Zoe Vail Smith's great sequence of races, who just like Andrius was cut short in her prime.  How strange for both of them to get stopped in their tracks like that - but there's the harsh world of distance running for you.  Zoe becomes the seventh different winner of this title in seven years.  You would have got long odds on Felicity Cole and Christina Pennock occupying the next two spots at the start of the season, but what troopers they've been amidst the chaos all around.  And the same goes for another debutante in fourth, Megan Bailey. The ladies have earnt this sabbatical for good behaviour after four wonderful seasons, and we're quite sure normal service will resume next term!
