UKWAL Div 3, Match 2 - Liverpool

With this match being a double, with division 2 and the first event starting at 09.45, the athletes in the early events had to travel up the night before. For the remainder It seemed like a long way to go for a Sunday day-trip, but these brave souls made the valiant effort to drag themselves to Merseyside to see what delights Wavertree Stadium (Liverpool) had to offer, accompanied of course by the ever supportive Fairclough’s, Charlie & Bob.

The day started early for the throwers but the ever welcome return of Rachel Basford was an exciting addition to the throwing squad and she did not disappoint with a 2nd place in the B string hammer, with Mia Callenberg a very solid 4th in the A string up against some very strong competition. The same duo returned to the throwing cage later in the day for Discus and also the Shot circle, where they both picked up 3rd place, gathering yet more valuable points for the team. Jodie Albrow & Laura Reilly finished off the long throws with a 3rd & 6th in the A & B string javelin respectively.

Meanwhile, in the sand pit, Jodie Albrow was sadly the sole representative in the long jump but hauled herself over the 5m mark for a solid 3rd place, and Helen Brown the only Belle in the triple jump but adding valuable points for the team.

Never to be put off by a barrier put in her way Helen Brown completed her trio of events with the 400mH & 2km steeplechase where she finished 6th & 4th respectively.

Jodie Albrow put in a strong performance in the sprint hurdles to finish 3rd in a toughly fought race with a favourable tail wind!

In the middle distance, Ula Cartwright-Finch & Jugita Levertaviciu both ran well to finish 3rd, and in the 1500m Saron Haileselase finished strongly to produce another 3rd place finish. Jugita also ran amongst a tough field in the 3000m, where she added yet more valuable points with a 5th place finish.

And finally, in the sprints, Laura Reilly picked up valuable points in the 100m, Nina Anderson ran well in the 200m for 5th place against tough competition having earlier ran a great 400m in very tough conditions for a comprehensive victory in the B string and Chyna Russell struggled against the wind in the back straight for 3rd place in the A string.

The day was of course rounded off with the relays, what can only be described as super-women, rallied to produce a 4th in the 4x100 & a 3rd in the 4x400!

Overall on the day, City of Liverpool unsurprisingly came out the victors but Belgrave managed an amazing 5th behind Rugby, Nene Valley & Havering who all travelled seemingly better than we did. A group of weary bodies made their way back to London all looking forward to the short trip to Lee Valley for the final match of the season in just 4 weeks.
