"Two Belgravians Braved the Heat", Herne Hill Open Meeting, Saturday 26 August
Photo Credit: Lizzie Goldie -Scott Nick Buckle ran in the 10,000m which incorporated the Surrey Championships. Nick has raced well all season, achieving PBs over 5000m and 10,000m earlier in the summer. The Epsom & Ewell runner Ollie Garrod took the early lead with steady 79-second laps, forming a lead group of about seven runners. Nick and Ollie took it in turns to lead an evenly paced race. The lead pack whittled down to a group of four as the laps ticked over. Then with five laps to go Nick made his move, upping the pace to 75-second laps. The Epsom & Ewell runner was instantly dropped, but the Orpington Road Runners athlete Alex Money looked as though he may still pose a threat over a sprint finish. However consistent 75-second laps and a final 71-second lap left Nick with a comfortable lead and secured him the Surrey 10,000m Championship title in a time of 32:41 for the win.Andy Fyfe narrowly missed out breaking 4 minutes for the 1500m. Leading straight from the gun with an opening lap of 61, he then extended his lead, reeling off the next two laps in 65 and 66 seconds. Try as he might over the final lap and without any help from his competitors, he fell less than a second short of his target finishing in 4:00:86. However, it was a terrific solo effort and he was awarded a PB, and the second win for Belgrave on the day. L:R Middle : Nick Buckle
