Rosenheim League Final

Tooting Bec, Wednesday 10th August

Report by Team Manager Adam Cameron

Belgrave Harriers once again made the final of the Rosenheim League, with the Men qualifying after a strong summer competing. The field was both larger and stronger than the previous races, with Hercules Wimbledon, Herne Hill, Croydon, Kingston and Polytechnic, Epson and Ewell and St Mary’s completing the final mens line up.

Conditions were almost perfect for the night and a strong showing of athletics was on display, throughout all events. In the field, Sam Shore picked up a point in an unfavored High Jump event, once again showing his versatility. Tom Ikeda continued a superb season for the club and his commitment to the cause, taking third place in the Javelin and fourth in the Shot, against an unusually strong field. On the track, Nick Buckle narrowly missed out on first place, easily running home to second in the Steeplechase before a tightly contested 1500m race only missing out on a top 2 spot by seconds, taking fourth. Adam Cameron then picked up further points in a close 800m race followed by a blistering 100m by Sam Ige, clocking under 11 seconds and second place, during a night full of difficult sprinting competition. Nick Barrett, Sam Shore and Michael McBrinn all looked strong through 100m, adding to Belgrave’s returning sprinting reputation. Adam Dudgeon completed his first 400m of the year, unfortunately coming up against the strongest field of the night in the mens 400m with Hercules and Herne Hill runners dipping under 50 seconds. This was followed by Richard McMillan and Michael McBrinn completing the 400m set, both setting positive times in another tough line up. The excitement of the 200m was suitably justified, as Sam Ige bolted across the line to third place in the scoring race with only the smallest of margins separating the front three. Sam Shore and Nick Barrett ran side by side in the following 200m race, both looking strong again during a tough night. Arguably the performance of the day came in the 3000m as Gus Upton ran clear of chasing Hercules and Herne Hill runners to smash the 9 minute mark and record first place. The night was rounded up in the 4x200m, where Belgrave ran through to third, in the strongest field of the summer. Sam Ige got out quickest and handed the baton level with Hercules and Herne Hill before handing to Adam Cameron who maintained speed around the bend but it was the sprint speed of Sam Shore who bolted Belgrave back into the lead, before Nick Barrett powered down the home straight, caught only seconds away by the unmatched power of the Herne Hill and Hercules runners.Belgrave took fourth overall, and given the field, this was a strong and hard working performance from all of the team.As manager I would like to say a big thanks to all of the athletes competing this summer, the conditions and structure has lacked at times but the commitment for a midweek fixture saw us reach and look competitive in a hotly contested final. Also thanks to Bob Bridges and Matt Threadgold for stepping in to manage, and the female runners who performed so well this summer.
