Junior Surrey Cross Country League, Race 4, Wimbledon Common and Richmond Park, 10 Feb 2018

Our last match of the Surrey Cross Country League season saw a depleted attendance from our athletes, primarily because of half term holidays, with many of our Juniors reluctantly travelling abroad with their aged parents, mainly on skiing trips. I sympathise, but I guess someone has to do it.First away were the Girls in Richmond Park, running over a course that went up, down, up and then down again, managing to avoid anything remotely resembling a flat surface. I say Girls. I actually meant Girl, with Maddy Whitman, who would probably turn out and race if there was an impending nuclear attack due, being our only representative, with traffic preventing the other ever-present, Juliette Michot, from getting to the line before the start. Maddy finished an impressive 17th overall and 12th U15G in the U17/U15 Girls race. With other teams equally depleted by school holidays the Junior Belles still managed to finish 12th team, so well done Maddy, her very own one person team. Whilst the mud in Richmond Park was difficult, it was a mere wafer thin layer compared to the conditions that the Boys found a mile away on Wimbledon Common. With the rain coming down in sheets by the start of the race, and their Coach deciding not to lie to the Boys and admitting that the course was an absolute nightmare (but fun, Ha!), Belgrave had six brave souls shivering but ready action on the start line by 2:30pm.First home was Caspar Griffin, placing 7th in the U15B category and 4th overall. Next up was another ever-present, Joseph O'Clery, 27th scorer, with Julius Bennett only 4 places behind.Zayd Addicott was the next Belgravian home in 57th, followed in 62nd place by Quinn Whitman, experiencing his first ever English cross country race after the more benign dry, straw covered and flat courses of his American homeland. Welcome to sunny England Quinn! Despite the rain, and the cold, and the mud, and the hills, our Boys managed an excellent 4th out of 14 teams in the U17/15 team placings. Our sole representative in the U13 category (and at 10, the youngest runner in the field) was Max Simpson, having yet another blinder to finish 77th, 12 places ahead of the last athlete home. We will certainly be seeing more of Max next season.
