A great start for Belgrave in first Rosenheim match

Rosenheim League, Match 1

Battersea Park, Wednesday 10 May

Report by Robert Norville

On a perfect night for athletics, we produced some stand out performances as the men won their match comfortably as all events were covered and the women came second missing out on a win with a few spaces empty on the team sheet. It was a great effort and team spirit was at a high.

In the men’s match Matt Threadgold is coming into great form with a solid run only to be sneakily pipped on the line for 2nd in the 400m. Gus Upton stepped out of his comfort zone of the longer side of middle distance to run his first 800m race. He looked comfortable all the way round for 1st though he admitted after that it was actually brutal. Paskar Owor continues to edge back to fitness with a 2nd place in the 3000m unable to stay with the surge put in by Serpentines Jonathan Poole. Also in that race Matt Welsh and Nick Buckle ran a brilliant race together for their best ever timing both clocking sub 9 minutes for the first time. And Will Cockerell donned the claret and gold again to help the team out in the ever so favourite 2000SC valiantly coming in 3rd.

In the women’s event, Eve Grogan and Claire Stokes covered the sprints coming 1st and 2nd in the 100m, 200m & 400m. Over the middle distances, Fiona Maddocks ran a tough race just placing 2nd after being pipped at the end and Lizzie Goldie-Scott coming 1st in both the 1500m & 3000m. With most field events covered by Ellen Hunter & Vilma Thompson the women fought gamely for 2nd place behind Serpentine.

So a great start and great effort from both teams and a special thanks to all those that helped me out on the night.
