Fyfe leads charge for Golden Spike as Bels remain second in Surrey League

Andy Fyfe sits atop the Surrey League’s individual senior men’s standings at the halfway point of the competition, after finishing sixth at Beckenham Place Park.

Andy Fyfe led the Bels home to another second place in the team competition, with a strong turnout and some good performances at the sharp end of the field still unable to dislodge league leaders Hercules Wimbledon.

The start of the race was disrupted - or improved, depending on your passion for dogs - by a breakaway canine who tagged along with the race leaders for the first lap. Fyfe was able to keep his composure and finish sixth, which keeps him at the top of the individual leaderboard by a single point. He was followed home by Sam Gebreselassie in seventh, who crossed the line just a second behind. James Hancock finished an excellent 10th.

There were other notable performances from Fin Dyer (15th), Mack Downey (18th) and Larry Ryan (30th), while Harry Lawson crossed the line in 65th on his Belgrave debut.

The Bels are 115 points adrift of Hercules in the main league standings, although we are currently at the top of B league, a competition that we secured last season. With two races to go, the Surrey League title is still just in reach, but victory will require a near-perfect turnout if it’s to be achieved come February. Andy Fyfe’s Golden Spike prospects remain bright.
