So close but yet so far

Rosenheim league final

Kingsmeadow athletics track

Having to tend with last minute dropouts through injury or illness as well as warm up injuries, our task on the night was made that little bit more difficult. But with a collective effort, we plugged as many gaps as possible to be as competitive as we could. The night kicked off with the 110m hurdles. During the warm up, Monique Krefting pulled up with a tight calf. Ellie Krefting gamely stepped into her first hurdle race and came 4th in a very tight finish. With no runner in the men’s we needed strong results in the forthcoming events. Alfonso Leone ran hard but with the field split he found himself on his own finishing in 6th. With our initial women's 800m runner pulling out with a foot injury Maureen Noel ran round to get us a couple points. We needed some big points now so it was good that the 100m was up next and we had Sam Ige and Sandra Dike running for us. A 1st and 2nd followed and things started to look a little better. We had no male runner for the 400m but Ellie Krefting ran to an impressive 2nd in-between winning the long jump. Middle distance is where we have real strength in depth at the moment and with the 1500m up next we had the impressive Andrew Fyfe who didn't disappoint with a dominant win. Lizzie Goldie-Scott came 2nd as she continued her fine form of the season. In the field, Ellen Hunter jumped for us in the pole vault but we had no male jumper. Ever dependable Chris Privett and Mia Callenberg came 2nd and 3rd respectively in the hammer. At this point Kingston were in the overall lead but we had started to reel them in. With the 200m next Sam Ige and Sandra Dike again came 1st and 2nd before Paskar Owor played around with his competitors in the 3000m teasing them all the way round before easing to a comfortable win. Lizzie Goldie-Scott came 2nd in a race that didn't feature the female winner as she ran in the men’s race instead. A bit of controversy aptly explained away by match officials as a grey area. Zack Darlington came 3rd in the long jump as we continued to chase Kingston. With Mia Callenberg again coming 2nd in the discus and Peter Mayfield also 2nd after coming back from major surgery and with one event to go, it was on the wire as to whether we had done enough to win. With the relays left called upon the help of Matt Welsh to step into unfamiliar territory in the 4 x 200m men's relay. We could only imagine what went through his head as he took the baton on the second leg and tried desperately to hang onto seasoned sprinters. The men came a valiant 4th and as the women came in a solid 2nd.As we waited for the final results congratulating the efforts of everyone involved, the announcement came that both the men and women had come 2nd with Kingston winning both matches. A great effort on the night and over the season! With a few less injuries and a few more gaps filled, who knows what we may have achieved. But we can be proud of what we produced.Jack Olsen also ran to wins in the n/s 100m & 200m, Matt Welsh got a PB in the 1500m with another impressive run whilst there were also runs for Georgia Keeley, Scott Mills, Julia Wedmore and Maureen Noel. Results at below linkhttp://www.thepowerof10.info/results/results.aspx?meetingid=200365
