'Bridges' record goes at last
Tuesday 25th February.
Fresh from her outstanding 7th place in the National at Nottingham last Saturday, Tish Jones broke the women's record for the 'Bridges', a time set by Pam Davies nearly 50 years ago. Tish's time was set during one of our regular Tuesday night time trials last night.
Starting at the Rosary Gate, Battersea Park, and running around the outside of the park and over both Chelsea and Albert bridges, this course has been used as a time trial by Belgravians for over 60 years. Tish's time of 13:55 was the first ever time by a women to go under 14 minutes beating Pam's record of 14.20 set all those years ago. Times under 15 minutes are very rare for women, only Sarah Murphy and Felicity Cole have achieved this in recent years, so running under 14 minutes is truly outstanding.
Pam Davies was a remarkable runner, placing no less than 7 times in the National from 1963 to 1969, winning the race four times. She ran the 'Bridges' in the week before each of her wins, the first in 1965, finding a formula which worked very well for her. It was in one of these pre National runs that Pam set her record all those years ago.
