A grand send-off for a truly great runner

Gerry North's coffin is carried along the finish straight of the Mountbatten Stadium. Pall bearer Tony Fairclough remarked: "It was the first time I've ever crossed the finish line alongside him!"

Monday 14 April.

Well over 200 people turned out for the funeral of Gerry North at Portchester Cemetery, near Portsmouth. Before the service Gerry's coffin was carried along the finish straight of the Mountbatten Centre athletic track, the scene of so many Victory 5 mile road races that he had organised. Pall bearers included our own Tony Fairclough, a team member alongside Gerry back in the 1960s and 70s. Attendees at the service included many Belgravians and members of Portsmouth AC, but also some from Blackpool where Gerry's running career began, and from Lauriston Runners.
