Lockdown training diaries #2: Aussie special

Aussie special.jpg

In the second instalment of our lockdown training diaries, we check in with two Australian Belgravians - both talented marathoners, both currently on opposite sides of the world.

Firstly, a huge welcome to new Bel Reece Edwards, who’s had one of the weirdest relocations of all time, moving from Australia to Putney (via the Netherlands) just days before his new home country went into lockdown. Reece is a 2:16 marathoner and described by pal Ben MacCronan (more from him later) as “a top man” and also “loose”, which I’m assuming are both Australianisms for “good lad”.

Here’s what he’s been up to:

Reece Edwards

Best performance of the last couple of years:

Chicago Marathon 2018 - 2:16:43 or CPC half marathon 2020 - 64:44

What had you been targeting this summer?

Rotterdam Marathon

Where are you and how are you coping with the lockdown?

I moved to Putney recently from Australia at the end of March. Still trying to find the ideal running loops around Putney, which is keeping me busy during the lockdown.

What's changed in your training?

I have stopped all double runs since the lockdown, so training volume is only around 80-100km per week now. I have been trying my best to follow the 60mins a day rule for exercising.

What did your training diary look like last week?

Mon: 40mins jog
Tues: 60min run with 6 x 2 mins efforts in the middle
Weds: 40min jog
Thurs: 70min run with 2 lap tempo at Battersea park
Fri: 30mins jog
Sat: 40mins jog
Sun: 90min long run

Ben MacCronan

Best recent performance?

2019 Melbourne marathon 10th 2:23:19

What had you been targeting this year?

Australian 50k championships

Where are you and how are you coping with lockdown?

Would nice to be home in Toowoomba but with living and training in Canberra at the moment and with the interstate travel restrictions in place, I decided to go back to full time work as a plant operator.

How has your training changed?

It hasn't really affected my training that much have really only dropped a few kms here and there. If anything I have just been running by feel and not really worrying about times.
