Belgrave’s Josh Trigwell is the new England Athletics 1500m champion after a hard fought victory at Bedford.

On a sticky Sunday afternoon Josh finished second behind Australia’s Matthew Hussey but judged his run perfectly to beat Aldershot’s Ricky Harvie and Great Yarmouth’s Tyler Bilyard to the English title.

The Belgravian had six athletes ahead of him at the bell, but in scenes reminiscent of Jake Wightman’s World Championships win 11 days earlier, used his physicality to get himself into gold medal position at the final bend and had the strength to hold off his challengers in the final 100m.

Shortly after his win, livestream cameras caught Josh being congratulated by coach John Bicourt, credited by Josh for his recent resurgence not much more than a year after nearly quitting the sport.

Club legend Bicourt competed in the ‘72 and ‘76 Olympic steeplechase and went on to coach other Belgrave luminaries including 1996 Chicago marathon winner Paul Evans.

Josh’s national title-winning race can be watched on the below stream starting at 4:48:30.
